Important Dates in the History of PPCC
- 1879-Powells Point Christian Church had its beginning in the summer of 1879 when a preacher named Nealy came to Currituck County for the purpose of establishing a New Testament Church. The first few meetings were held outdoors, in a grove of large red oaks and pines. They soon moved to a school house. The meetings continued for forty two nights.
- 1885-The first building was erected at a cost of $373.86 onproperty donated by D.L. and Robana Griggs. This building was later sold for a dwelling when it became inadequate for the congregation.
- 1886-Seven years after the church was organized, a new post office was established by the name of Harbinger. The community changed it's name but Powells Point Christian Church retained its orginal name.
- 1910-The present building was erected. The building was 35 feet wide, and 60 feet long, with a small library room on the south side. While there is no record of it's exact cost, $800 was borrowed to finance the incurring expenses of construction.
- 1919-From its beginning the church was lighted by kerosene lamps, in 1919 the first power plant was installed and then upgraded in 1929.
- 1944-The church building was pushed from its foundation by The Great Atlantic Hurricane, Sept. 17. Church members were successful in restoring the sanctuary to its orignial position.
- 1948-The facility was expanded with several classrooms and an office.
- 1954- The facitity was again expanded with two more classrooms and two restrooms
- 1960-One classroom was converted into a kitchen
- 1963-All of the pews in the church were replaced and new hardwood floors was put in the sanctuary.
- 1966-The orginal parsonage was sold and moved to another location in Harbinger for a dwelling, it is still being used today.
